A staggering figure of over 4 million pilgrims visited the holy city of Mecca to perform Umrah in Ramadan in 2025, shattering all previous records of history. This amount of worshippers highlights the significance of this holy trip. Umrah offers a golden chance to the believers to re-kindle their faith. It helps them develop a strong bond with Allah Almighty.
Each step of this holy journey is filled with spiritual meaning, and the words you recite during each ritual hold deep power. Because these verses are in Arabic, many pilgrims are unable to know the meaning of what they are reciting. As a result, they merely recite phrases without knowing the exact translation. This makes it even more difficult to get connected with the Creator deeply. This blog will guide you about different verses that you need to recite at every step of the Umrah. Whether you travel through Umrah packages or Family Umrah Packages, learning about the meaning of the recited verses is important.
Different Verses to Recite During Umrah
This section will explore various verses that pilgrims must recite in Umrah rituals. Let’s have an in-depth view of each step:
- Dua for Ihram
Ihram is a piece of clothing especially worn during the pilgrimage. Men are supposed to wear two unstitched white sheets, while women can wear any dress as long as it fulfills the condition of modesty. Female pilgrims must not cover their face, hands, or feet as a part of Ihram. However, covering the full body is vital for them.
Derived from Arabic roots, Ihram means to enter the state where certain prohibitions are made. While clothing does matter, the actual Ihram is the intention and the Talbiya recited. The intention must be made at the Miqat point or before.
Miqat is a specific boundary where Muslims wear the Ihram. There are different points within Saudi Arabia for Muslims coming from various countries such as Iraq, Palestine, or Yemen. To make the intention for Ihram, recite the following dua:
“Glory be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is Most Great.”
Once Ihram is worn, pilgrims must perform two rakats Sunnah and make the intention for performing Umrah. The supplication for Umrah is:
“O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah, so make it easy for me and accept it from me.”
Another dua which is to be recited by the pilgrims is the Talbiya. Pilgrims should recite this three or more times in any state and stop right before starting the Tawaaf ritual. Below is the verse that every Muslim must recite:
“Here I am, O Allah, here I am; You have no partner, here I am; all praise, blessings, and authority belong to You, and You have no partner.”
- Dua for Tawaf
Tawaaf is the most important ritual of the Umrah. Without this step, your pilgrimage will not be completed. Pilgrims circle the Holy Kaaba seven times in an anti-clockwise direction. The Tawaaf begins and ends at the Black Stone point. Muslims must prepare themselves before the Tawaaf. Men are supposed to expose their right shoulder, a minor step known as Idtiba. Moreover, Tawaaf needs to be performed in the state of ablution (wudu). Without raising hands and facing the Black Stone, you will rectie these verses to make the intention of Tawaaf:
“In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and all praise is due to Allah”
- Dua for Sa’i
Sa’i is another significant step in the Umrah. It includes walking between the hills of Safa and Marwa seven times. The ritual begins in Safa and ends at the Marwa. Muslims are not required to have any intention for this ritual, nor are they required to perform wudu.
The following verse from the Quran must be recited when you climb the Safa at the beginning:
“Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the sacred signs of Allah. So, whoever performs Hajj or Umrah to the House, there is no blame on them if they walk between them. And whoever does good willingly, then surely, Allah is Appreciative and All-Knowing.”
Upon reaching to the top of the Safaa, pilgrims must read this:
“Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah alone, without any partner. His is the kingdom, and to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over everything. There is no god but Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, helped His servant, and defeated the enemies all by Himself”
While walking in between both hills, you can recite any Quranic verses or even make personal dua for yourself and your loved ones. After reaching Marwa, pilgrims will repeat the same supplication as mentioned above. After the seventh round, they should perform two rakat Nafl, though it is optional.
- Dua for Taqsir
After completing the Sa’i between Safa and Marwa, the final step of Umrah is either Halq or Taqsir. Halq means shaving the entire head. Taqsir means cutting a small portion of the hair. Both are acts of worship and show that you have humbled yourself before Allah. For men, Halq is more rewarding. The Prophet (PBUH) made a special dua for those who shave their heads. But if a man plans to do another Umrah or Hajj soon, he can choose Taqsir.
For Taqsir, it’s better to trim at least one inch from all around the head, not just a small part. For women, Taqsir is the only option. They should cut a fingertip’s length (around an inch or two) from the end of their hair. This must be done by someone who is no longer in Ihram.
During this step, you should feel thankful and peaceful. You can say this short dua while cutting the hair:
“O Allah, accept this from me just as You accepted it from Your beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).”
This step shows you have completed your Umrah. Once your hair is cut, all the Ihram rules are lifted. You are now free from Ihram. This moment brings joy, peace, and a fresh connection with your Lord.
